Woes Continue Weeks After Flooding

Weeks after flooding, Veronica Giamusso, a member of the King’s College community talks about how the September 2011 floods in Northeast Pennsylvania are still affecting her family.

Veronia's 15-year-old daughter, Courtney Giamusso, lost almost the entire contents of her bedroom in the flood, when 6 feet of water filled the Giamusso's basement.  The dining room table serves as Courtney's temporary closet.

Flood waters rose above this ten foot embankment when the Susquehanna River crested at 42.6 feet on Sept 9, 2011 and flooded the Giamusso's house in Harding, PA which sits approx. 3/10 of a mile from the river.

A car off in the distance marks the house.  During flooding this entire area was under water.

  1. For this radio feature piece I interviewed Veronica Giamusso at her flood damaged home, and took still pictures on location to complement the story. To capture sound, I used a digital recorder and edited my soundclips with Audacity.

Things I would have changed: 1) shortened the soundbites from the interview 2)used a second source 3)tightened up some of my editing.

  2. When I edited this piece, I added a voice over sound bite to break up the long first section of the interview, and I also cleaned up the audio by deleting the "clicks" between sections.

  3. Updated 12/11/10 at 2:45pm: Made a final edit to shorten the piece to just under 5 minutes. I took out another sound bite of Veronica on tape and added additional voice over.
